Irv Gordon is heading to France

Anna Kruchowski

Irv has almost 2.8 million miles on his ’66 P1800. The last engine rebuild was at 600,000 miles and then last summer at about 2.7 million. There’s some darn tough Swedish iron in that engine.

He has been invited to France for their annual Volvo club event. Too bad the car is staying here. It’s way too expensive to ship back and forth. But he’ll be staying for two to three weeks and hosted by some really nice Volvo owners. I guess they’ll take turns feeding him some awesome food and wine. Yeah, I’m jealous.

Irv promised to send photos and a few words while he’s there. I know he’s taking over a bunch of his 100,000 and 200,000 mile award badges. I hope they understand it’s not kilometers, but I guess some day we will be metric. I know, “one inch at a time.” Is a 7/16 socket the same as an 11 mm? Gosh, which one is easier? Oh well.

This photo is from last fall. A crew from PBS’s “NOVA” series filming Irv’s car up in New York.

Fantastic for Irv! Amazing to realize that, to the French, his 1800 has traveled 4,506,163 kilometers- quite a figure. I’m sure they’ll treat him very nicely.
That somehow doesn’t look like Irv in the car, though…
    ; )

Is a maintenance log available for Irv’s car? Would love to know what work was done other than the routine maintenance. Thanks…

I know he keeps all repair orders, like oil changes, etc. I’ll ask him.

Best of luck in France! Have a wonderful time.

    Dave,
Irv said he really doesn’t have a log book but boxes of service invoices for oil changes and stuff that goes wrong…rarely. Irv isn’t much of a record keeper…good math teacher but, well a nutty professor would fit his profile to a ‘t’.

Trip to France was just awesome. The club members lent me a red 1800 much like mine to drive to the event at the Chateau Bruiel. Volvo of France lent me a new S80 Diesel with all the whistles and bells….a wonderful car! I put almost 2000 miles on that car and traveled over as much of Fance as I could in the time I had. Paris was a bit daunting as there is no place to park once you get where you want to go. My hosts were just wonderful and I got to share of slice of French life not available to most tourists. My new friends in France were just wonderful and most generous with their time and to make sure I got to “see it all.”
Regarding a log of my repairs….since I have it all done at the same dealer I purchased my car at in 1966…it is all in their computers and I let them keep track of my mileage and service records. What could be easier???? These are the records the Guinness Book of Records people wanted to see to certify my mileage.
