I’m a bargain hunter

danjohnston

I’m a hobby woodworker. Why? It’s something tangible and I love the smell of wood being worked. I like building stuff that I can pass along to my kids and to my kids’ kids. Looking back on life, I have nothing from my fathers or grandparents, so for me, I want to leave something behind for my clan.

Like all woodworkers, I have tools. I’m not a tool hound but there is one tool I’ve been lusting after for the last couple of years – a super quality  6″ orbital sander. This one has almost no vibrations, collects something like 99% of its sanding dust, is very quiet, and leaves no swirls. It’s a luxury sander; top of the heap. I regularly shop Craig’s List and Ebay for used ones with no luck. I’ve also been watching sites that offer reconditioned tools – again, with no luck. No one has ever put it on sale. So I’m just waiting.

We have two sweet deals that if you wait for something better, your luck will run out. The first offer is for the S60 T5 AWD and the other is that Volvo will make your payments for four months. The S60 T5 AWD offer is almost the same price I paid for our S60 T5 FWD, so I know that’s a good deal. Even with my employee discount, owner loyalty and the lease offer running at that time I bought mine, this new offer is that good. And you’ll pay nothing for the first four months, so come on in and take one home. Both offers finish at the end of this month.

You know we make cars stronger than Viking boats, safer than…well you know, just about the safest vehicles out there, with modern, Scandinavian design (so don’t be like me and wait for something better to come along, or in my case something at all). Below are the links to the Volvo Summer Sales event. Check them out and see for yourself. Maybe I’ll get lucky this week on Craig’s List. :)

If a deal like that comes along for a C70 I’ll take you up on it. (My fiscally conservative wife will go along with it if I get rid of 2 running cars from the fleet of 7, but I am still negotiating that). And maybe I will buy you a sander, Dan!

    Hi Jim,
Know exactly your position. I had a fleet of three here and garage for two, with neighbors who really don’t like cars in driveways. Sold my really sweet ’72 VW Convert to make room for our S60. Considering that every time I took it out was like wonderful but about as safe as a moped on I-95 with big tractor tailer on your tail. Just checked and C70 is part of our Summer (four months on us) deal :) Oh, and thanks for the offer on that sander, but at this point the challenge is to get a deal.

You’re killing me! Big build up on the orbital sander and then you don’t drop the name and model. :-)

    Ok Gary,
Bosch 1250DEVS 6-1/2-Amp 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Vacuum Port
    Or this Festool 571786ETS15036InchRandomOrbitSander

I see Amazon has the Bosch on sale for $230 and Frestool somewhere else for little over $300. Well maybe I need to bite the sandpaper and do something. We’ll see. For what I’ve been working on lately, I’ve been doing hand sanding. Takes much longer but I’m able to control how much material is removed. I think the 6″ disc would give me enough width to keep contours straight and conform to curves. I’ve got a sheet orbital and is only good for outdoor sanding and couple of 18″ belt sanders but those are for rough shaping. You play with wood?
