One more event at NY Auto Show
S60 Named 2011 International Sedan of the Year “Most Dependable”
The Volvo S60 was awarded the 2011 International Sedan of the Year at the New York International Auto Show by the International Car of the Year (ICOTY) jury. The all-new sport sedan was deemed best-in-class for the most superlative connection with consumer lifestyles. The selection was made by a jury of 12 nationally recognized automotive journalists.
The ICOTY Awards are not based on camshafts and chrome but rather lifestyles compatibility and how well automakers achieve that goal,” said Courtney Caldwell, ICOTY executive producer.
In its 15th year, the ICOTY Awards remain a respected industry honor, measuring what no other automotive award does, the emotional connection between car and consumer.

First, check back on Wednesday this week. We have some really interesting news about S60 R-Design.
Second, Rich is a long time friend and fellow Volvo employee who retired couple of years ago. Every so often we do “Toy Day” at our Rockleigh, HQ. Meaning bring in your toys and we’ll do lunch. Barry brought in his hang glider, John brought his sweet Corvette, I brought in my old, long gone ’71 VW Camper (talk about unsafe…). Rich brought in his Isetta. Now, I remember as a kid seeing our local bicycle shop in Redondo Beach, on PCH, on his sidewalk lined with Schwinn bicycles and a bright red Isetta. It was small.
Many years later after seeing Rich’s masterful restrotation project, did I realize how small small was. Then again, maybe our future will be small small again.
Here’s what Rich wrote:
The 2011 NY International Auto Show starts this week. I have been invited to show my ’57 BMW Isetta at the show, which as always is at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.
Those of you in the industry can see my car (with another 20 or so microcars) on Wednesday and Thursday during press and manufacturer days. The car will then stay there for the 1st 3 days of the public show, which are Fri/Sat/Sun. The special microcar exhibit ends Sunday night Apr. 24.
To find us, look for the LeMay Museum Special Exhibit on the lower level. I will be there every day except Thursday. Please come by and say hello!
Richard
So stop by, introduce yourself to Richard. Then check out our show stand.

Usually this blog is about behind-the-scenes stuff, at least from our corporate side. Today, we want to share with you an interesting announcement that reflects Volvo’s future. Some of us have driven today’s prototype C30 Electric, I guess much like a few employees drove prototype fuel injected cars in the late ’60s. We are amazed by new technologies, yet looking back, it was rather primitive. Going to be an interesting ride with this new generation of engineers coming on board.

Volvo Car Corporation recruits up to 1,200 people
Volvo Car Corporation’s aggressive product plan for the future creates a need to recruit up to 1,200 people within the next 12 months, mainly in Research and Development.
“We need to expand our operations to enable development of the highly competitive and fuel efficient products and technologies which are part of our growth plan”, says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
The majority of the new recruitments will be engineers within Research and Development where the company needs among other things new competence in the field of electrification. Electrification of vehicles as part of advanced fuel efficiency technology is an area where Volvo Car Corporation is investing heavily. There is also a need for more people within areas such as Purchasing, IT and Marketing. Also in manufacturing there is a need to expand to manage the increased volumes which are planned for 2011 and ahead.
2010 was a turnaround year for the global car industry and Volvo Car Corporation has strengthened its position in several markets with increased market shares, much thanks to the globally successful XC60 model and the wide range of fuel efficient models. After the well received launch of the all-new Volvo S60 and V60 the next step is the introduction of the Volvo V60 as the first plug-in hybrid model on the car market.
During last year, Volvo Cars’ global sales grew by 11.6 percent versus 2009 and the company delivered a profit for the full year. Also 2011 has taken off strongly with growth in both Europe and on the North American market. The manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium, is expected to reach new record levels in production volumes during 2011 and in the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, the line speed has been increased to meet the increased demand.
With its new ownership, Volvo Car Corporation has recently revealed that major investments will be made in new products and the industrial system in the coming years. The expansion of headcount within Research and Development and other areas is a first concrete example of these investments.
“This is one of the biggest recruitment projects that Volvo Car Corporation ever has carried out. The new engineers are needed to develop the technologies and car models which are part of the aggressive product plan that our board and executive management team has developed”, says Björn Sällström, Senior Vice President Human Resources at Volvo Car Corporation.
In the Swedish operations the recruitments consist of up to 1,000 new people, of which 900 are engineers, mainly within Product Development. In Belgium, around 200 people will be recruited to the Ghent manufacturing plant.

So you could say, “how sweet” and “nice children” but what have the rest of us done for reducing our oil consumption? The point that is staggering is that they accomplished their goal. Just look at the numbers below – amazing. Remember, “Think globally, act locally”? I’m certain none of these children thought of this project from that point of view but clearly they succeeded. They will be heading to Sweden this June, which is a great time of year to visit Sweden.
Job well done!

================================================================================

A team of 13-year-old students from Westerly Middle School in Westerly, R.I., will be representing the United States at the Volvo Adventure International Final in Gothenburg this June.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Volvo Adventure, an environmental competition for young students (13-16 years old). The top 10 projects from around the world are selected for a trip to Sweden where they will compete for
The U.S. winners decided to tackle global warming by creating a sustainable project to collect the town’s waste cooking oil, refine it into biofuel and then distribute it. The students, part of team “T.G.I.F. – Turn Grease Into Fuel,” convinced their town to place a grease receptacle at the town’s transfer station to collect waste cooking oil from residents. The group also persuaded 90 local restaurants to donate their waste cooking oil. The students then collaborated with a company to collect the oil and bring it to a waste refiner. The proceeds from the refiner were used to purchase Bioheat from a local distributor to distribute to local charities.
The project has collected over 36,000 gallons of waste oil and produced 30,000 gallons of biofuel a year, which eliminated 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, 40 families have been helped directly from the team’s purchase of Bioheat.

You know…Swedes are strong willed folks. When they set their minds do to something it gets done. For quite some time we have been working on improving vehicle quality. Oh, not that what we did in our past wasn’t good, we just knew we could do better. While this isn’t a resting point for us, it is conformation that what we are doing is showing in today’s Volvo’s.

Consumer Reports Automaker Report Cards 2011
(excerpt from their press release)
European cars generally perform well in Consumer Reports road tests, but many have confusing controls and inconsistent reliability. Volvo is the only European make with an above-average reliability score.
In Consumer Reports ‘Grading the automakers‘ Volvo’s overall score was 68, the top player Honda having a score of 74 - not that far ahead of us. Volvo’s standing was fourth place, ahead of Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and few others. Ahead of us were Subaru and Toyota. Given the leader was just 6 points out in front, well, we’re all rather happy with what we are doing and where we are going.
Go buy their April issue and you be the judge.
Now doesn’t that bagel and coffee taste better? Mine sure does.

A journalist friend (thanks Herb) sent this over. I know I’m preaching to the choir but maybe you can send this to someone you care about. I had a good friend who died from drinking, not in a car, but probably could have been. If just one person sees this and gets it’s message, that would be a great gift.

Posted in General, Sweden, Video | 2 Comments »You know, there are good and then REALLY good days
Jame Hope has been working with Champion Tools (they make ‘Jaws of Life’ kind of equipment) for, gosh, probably the last 4-5 years to provide them Volvo cars to rip apart (see http://www.volvoblog.us/2009/08/26/champion-rescue-tools-and-volvo/). First, he had to figure how to tell accounting, our customs people, and scores of others that what he was doing wasn’t easy, but today, it’s a piece of Swedish coffee cake.
Even with Volvo providing cars, there is more demand than we can supply from an increasing group of accident responder schools. So James, creatively thinking as always, wrote this to all US PR guys.
He’s good at begging and also a darn good writer.
___
Hi all, (meaning hello to fellow PR people – dj)
First things first: This isn’t a pitch and I don’t want you to even respond to me.
I only ask that you take 30 seconds from your very busy day to read on. What you do following this note has no impact on me or Volvo. It may, however, help a first responder save the life of one of your customers.
It is well known that passengers are better protected with each evolution of passenger compartment technology, and that this safety took a huge leap forward with the incorporation of newer metals and metal combinations that the industry is using today.
But because of this great leap in safety technology, firefighters are increasingly arriving on the scenes of serious accidents involving today’s modern vehicles and discovering that their existing vehicle extrication techniques and tools are inadequate. This can delay the time it takes firefighters to get victims (your customers) out of these vehicles.
There is more background below. However, I’d like to cut to the chase so you can get on that conference call. If you have a proving ground in the U.S. where cars are moldering away in the sun, never to be sold and set to be scrapped, the Five Star Extrication Academy will gladly take these cars off your hands at no expense. They cover pick-up, transport and U.S. Customs-approved disposal (along with supporting paperwork). It’s no muss, no fuss. If you’re interested, simply shoot an e-mail or phone Brain James with the Five Star Extrication Academy. He can be reached at: Brian James – Simpatico Communications – 415-312-8746 or skilledpr@yahoo.com. I’m sure you’re wondering if I’m working for Simpatico. Rest assured, I’m not. I’m gainfully employed at Volvo and have no affiliation with Brian or the academy. However, if you’re not sure you want to reach out to him, by all means call me. I can give you the skinny.
If you’re down with this idea it costs you nothing but a few e-mails and has the potential to gain some media exposure. I know this because I’ve been handling it for Volvo for the last couple of years and Volvo continues to provide vehicles to the academy and other fire departments whenever we can. The problem is I don’t have enough cars!
Now, if you’re still hanging on every word, please read on.
The real issue is that firefighters have no problem finding junk cars at the nearest salvage yard. But finding modern cars built with today’s safety systems are problematic. The older the car, the more likely you are to find one in the junk yard. But how many 2010 Volvo S80s are just lying around Bob’s Barnyard of Broken Cars? Not many. And the same goes for any manufacturer.
Two years ago, Volvo partnered with the Five Star Extrication Academy. The vision for the pilot Academy was to offer firefighter training officers a day-long, no-cost training program about and with today’s tough new vehicles. Firefighters would then use this training to help reduce the time to extricate victims of today’s vehicle accidents which often leads to improved medical outcomes for accident victims.
Because Volvo is all about preserving life, we eagerly joined this effort. In the first two years, Volvo provided over $750,000 worth of vehicles from our Arizona proving grounds to the Five Star Extrication Academy, vehicles that would otherwise have been discarded. The firefighter training officers who attended these academy classes were then able to share their knowledge with thousands of firefighters who rescue vehicle accident victims daily.
This two-year pilot met with overwhelmingly positive responses from firefighters and their departments, and received a good bit of positive local television and emergency services’ trade media coverage. But that was simply frosting on the cake.
Now, as a result of the pilot program, there are more than 80 large fire departments in the United States and three Canadian provinces presently that want to offer the Five Star Extrication Academy classes to their rescue personnel, including New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Additionally, governments in Asia, Europe, and Latin America, including China, have offered to host this program for their national firefighting commissions.
Obviously, this initial idea to help save lives has blossomed into a global opportunity.
I just wanted to make you aware of the opportunity to support the growth of this training program for firefighters by providing test vehicles to this program. The growth of this program is only limited by the supply of donated five star crash-rated vehicles.
Best regards,
James Hope
