Volvo C30 DRIVe Electric crash test

40 mph Offset impact test

40 mph offset impact test

I’m at this year’s North America International Auto Show in (really cold) Detroit, where on Tuesday we will unveil a crash tested Volvo C30 DRIVe Electric, the world’s first showing of safety in an electric car.

Our focus is to bring the same kind of safety engineering leadership we do with all our cars into our EV program. Yeah, I know, “Isn’t that what you are suppose to do?” While dealing with an electric power system, the concept of passenger and first responder (fire/police/EMT) protection is the same, but the execution is different. The challenge is, and will continue to be, to protect people in an accident regardless of what kind of engine we use.

I’ll post some video when I can figure out how to stuff a 20 meg file into a 2 meg hole. :)

This holiday season …

A journalist friend (thanks Herb) sent this over. I know I’m preaching to the choir but maybe you can send this to someone you care about. I had a good friend who died from drinking, not in a car, but probably could have been. If just one person sees this and gets it’s message, that would be a great gift.

S60 T6 Road & Track magazine Feburary 2011

One very well written story about K-Pax Volvo S60 and our stock S60 T6. Magazine goes on sale in couple of weeks. Great photography of K-Pax car. Here’s couple of quotes by Shuan Bailey:

“…honestly I was expecting the new S60 and its Naughty Volvo advertising campaign to be mostly hype. I was wrong. ”

“A quick glance back at our last test of the Volvo S60 R in August 2005 reveals that this new car is a better athlete in every way.”

Irv Gordon (2.850 million miles on his Volvo) makes PBS Nova

I can tell you, Irv gets more interview coverage than just about anyone here at Volvo. I know he does at least two interviews a week with TV, print, or radio. He and his Volvo will, in couple of years, reach 3 million miles. He probably knows every good food stop in America.

Don’t miss this special feature, “Can My Car Live Forever?” airing January 26, 2011 on PBS.

“Irv Gordon, a retired science teacher from East Patchogue, New York, has managed to keep his 1966 Volvo P1800 going for four decades and over 2.7 million miles. How has he managed it, and can this recipe for longevity help the human body go the extra mile? Neil deGrasse Tyson visits Irv and takes a spin in his one-of-a-kind car.”

2011 S60 T6 Engine Award Just Announced

Volvo EngineWard’s Auto World, one of our leading automotive industry magazines, does an annual Top 10 engines awards. I asked one of their staffers how they judge what’s best. Basically, 70% of their scoring is based on real-world daily commute driving. How does the throttle response feel? Does it exceed expectations? Is noise/vibration/harshness an issue? The other 30% is about technology. Does it use new, innovative technology? Is torque and horsepower matched?

Here’s more information about this important acknowledgment of Swedish engineering:

Volvo’s Powerful T6 Engine Wins Prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award

Rockleigh, N.J. (December 7, 2010) –  Volvo’s hot new S60 sport sedan continues to impress the pundits with the announcement of its powerful T6 engine being lauded as one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2011. With a blistering 300 horsepower, 325 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 2,100 rpm and combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, it’s easy to see why.

This year marks a first for Volvo to win the annual award bestowed by the editors of Ward’s. In all, 38 vehicles with new or significantly improved engines were tested and evaluated. “Volvo clearly benchmarked BMW in developing the supremely smooth T6 engine, based on its delicious mid-range power band and paucity of turbo lag,” noted Tom Murphy, Executive Editor of Ward’s AutoWorld in his December 7 article highlighting the awards. “This engine is perfectly suited for the all-new S60 and powers it into contention against bigger, better-established luxury entries.”

The T6 engine, internally known as the B6304T, matches the torque of Volvo’s V8, but makes its power far lower in the rev range: 2,100 rpm compared to 3,950 rpm. While boasting 300 horsepower, fuel economy figures for the T6 of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway make it one of Volvo’s most fuel efficient engines offered in the U.S. In fact, the T6 engine is 17 percent more fuel efficient than the V8. Aside from the S60 sport sedan, the turbocharged T6 engine is also available in the 2011 S80, XC60 and XC70.

“The S60′s T6 engine is simply the best engine Volvo’s ever produced,” noted Doug Speck, President and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. “It’s powerful, smooth, and gets great fuel economy. We’re honored that Ward’s is recognizing the T6 engine as one of its 10 Best for 2011.”

Essentially a heavily modified version of the T6 originally introduced in the 2009 XC60 premium crossover, the goal for the 2011 iteration was to perfectly balance performance with fuel economy and maintain a low environmental impact. Volvo engineers focused their efforts on reducing internal friction, increasing power output and improving fuel economy.

The B6304T T6 benefits from improved valve tappets, which feature Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating. The carbon structure is extremely hard and has self-lubricating properties. The DLC surface reduces camshaft friction, enabling lower fuel consumption and extending service life. Additionally, a new type of Denso Super Ignition Spark Plug results in increased power output, improved fuel economy, better cold starting performance and longer service life. Highly polished cam shafts also result in reduced friction which helps contribute to the T6′s excellent fuel economy and performance.

Volvo also developed new engine management software optimized for fuel economy. The six-speed “Geartronic” transmission received revised mapping software that allowed for a new “Sport” mode. In “Sport” mode, the transmission remaps the shift points, holding the shifts higher in the rev band for improved performance. Other enhancements include revised frame bearings within the crankshaft, a low-friction accessory drive belt tensioner and aluminum water pump housing, all designed with improved engine efficiency in mind.

Volvo will be honored at the upcoming Ward’s 10 Best Engines banquet on January 12, 2011 at the Renaissance Center Marriott in Detroit, MI.

You know, there are good and then REALLY good days

Jame Hope has been working with Champion Tools (they make ‘Jaws of Life’ kind of equipment) for, gosh, probably the last 4-5 years to provide them Volvo cars to rip apart (see http://www.volvoblog.us/2009/08/26/champion-rescue-tools-and-volvo/). First, he had to figure how to tell accounting, our customs people, and scores of others that what he was doing wasn’t easy, but today, it’s a piece of Swedish coffee cake.

Even with Volvo providing cars, there is more demand than we can supply from an increasing group of accident responder schools. So James, creatively thinking as always, wrote this to all US PR guys.

He’s good at begging and also a darn good writer.

___

Hi all, (meaning hello to fellow PR people – dj)

First things first: This isn’t a pitch and I don’t want you to even respond to me.

I only ask that you take 30 seconds from your very busy day to read on. What you do following this note has no impact on me or Volvo. It may, however, help a first responder save the life of one of your customers.

It is well known that passengers are better protected with each evolution of passenger compartment technology, and that this safety took a huge leap forward with the incorporation of newer metals and metal combinations that the industry is using today.

But because of this great leap in safety technology, firefighters are increasingly arriving on the scenes of serious accidents involving today’s modern vehicles and discovering that their existing vehicle extrication techniques and tools are inadequate. This can delay the time it takes firefighters to get victims (your customers) out of these vehicles.

There is more background below. However, I’d like to cut to the chase so you can get on that conference call. If you have a proving ground in the U.S. where cars are moldering away in the sun, never to be sold and set to be scrapped, the Five Star Extrication Academy will gladly take these cars off your hands at no expense. They cover pick-up, transport and U.S. Customs-approved disposal (along with supporting paperwork). It’s no muss, no fuss. If you’re interested, simply shoot an e-mail or phone Brain James with the Five Star Extrication Academy. He can be reached at: Brian James Simpatico Communications 415-312-8746 or skilledpr@yahoo.com. I’m sure you’re wondering if I’m working for Simpatico. Rest assured, I’m not. I’m gainfully employed at Volvo and have no affiliation with Brian or the academy. However, if you’re not sure you want to reach out to him, by all means call me. I can give you the skinny.

If you’re down with this idea it costs you nothing but a few e-mails and has the potential to gain some media exposure. I know this because I’ve been handling it for Volvo for the last couple of years and Volvo continues to provide vehicles to the academy and other fire departments whenever we can. The problem is I don’t have enough cars!

Now, if you’re still hanging on every word, please read on.

The real issue is that firefighters have no problem finding junk cars at the nearest salvage yard. But finding modern cars built with today’s safety systems are problematic. The older the car, the more likely you are to find one in the junk yard. But how many 2010 Volvo S80s are just lying around Bob’s Barnyard of Broken Cars? Not many. And the same goes for any manufacturer.

Two years ago, Volvo partnered with the Five Star Extrication Academy. The vision for the pilot Academy was to offer firefighter training officers a day-long, no-cost training program about and with today’s tough new vehicles. Firefighters would then use this training to help reduce the time to extricate victims of today’s vehicle accidents which often leads to improved medical outcomes for accident victims.

Because Volvo is all about preserving life, we eagerly joined this effort. In the first two years, Volvo provided over $750,000 worth of vehicles from our Arizona proving grounds to the Five Star Extrication Academy, vehicles that would otherwise have been discarded. The firefighter training officers who attended these academy classes were then able to share their knowledge with thousands of firefighters who rescue vehicle accident victims daily.

This two-year pilot met with overwhelmingly positive responses from firefighters and their departments, and received a good bit of positive local television and emergency services’ trade media coverage. But that was simply frosting on the cake.

Now, as a result of the pilot program, there are more than 80 large fire departments in the United States and three Canadian provinces presently that want to offer the Five Star Extrication Academy classes to their rescue personnel, including New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Additionally, governments in Asia, Europe, and Latin America, including China, have offered to host this program for their national firefighting commissions.

Obviously, this initial idea to help save lives has blossomed into a global opportunity.

I just wanted to make you aware of the opportunity to support the growth of this training program for firefighters by providing test vehicles to this program. The growth of this program is only limited by the supply of donated five star crash-rated vehicles.

Best regards,

James Hope

I just love the sound of fine machinery

Brian Douglas, KSFO Motoring, Automotive News Talk recorded this today out at Oregon Raceway Park.

This track is located in eastern Oregon near the very small town of Grass Valley – basically wheat fields with beautiful vistas. Brian, with Andy Pobst of K-PAX at the helm, sat shotgun – oh the smell of hot pavement in the morning. This race season K-PAX Racing just finish 1-2 in Second Race at VIR, and clinch Drivers′ and Manufacturers′ Championships. This was in there highly modified S60. Later today we all drove regular S60′s at ORP track. Was great fun! I wasn’t slow but not real fast either, I’d say most journalists were much faster and smoother than I. At least I didn’t collect any dirt while pushing our S60 around tight turns. Turn up your speakers.

And here is Randy Pobst with our stock S60, track pattern is reversed from Andy’s run.
