“Naughty Tour” S60 Winners Announced

The S60 toured the country last year, and when people flocked to check it out, they also had the opportunity to win their own S60 T6 – and a trip to Gothenburg.

Three winners were selected from each of the regions: Kyle Hudson of Pompano Beach, Fla., Peter Koch of Conshohocken, Pa., and Karen Stevenson of Los Angeles. Each are getting ready to pack their bags and experience the trip of a lifetime. Though it might be hard to top the adventures they will have in Sweden, they will be coming back to an all-new S60 to create their own Volvo adventures each and every day.

The S60 “Naughty Tour” ran from July 6 – Nov. 11, 2010 with two phases, included 170 stops and nearly two thousand pedestrian demos. More than 11,000 attendees experienced the S60 along the way.

New S60 T5 arriving this month

We’re just announcing pricing for S60 T5 – $30,975. Honestly…a bargain. If you have driven this car, you’ll understand. If not, we have a surprise waiting for you. I and couple comrades, have been working with media to help them understand what we are up to and what this car can do for consumers. The reception has been astounding. I don’t think I have I seen this much media attention about one of our new cars since the launch of XC90 (our SUV).

I received an email from a journalist that said: “BTW, the S60 is a really nice car and the best Volvo I’ve driven in a long time – tight, nimble, quick, nice interior.” I think it is like opening a Cracker Jack box and finding it full of peanuts and cool prizes.

During our media launch last September, we presented the following to journalists. It helps understand our S60 positioning, our competitors, and how we stack up against them.

If you have any questions about S60, please feel free to rattle my cage – would be a nice break from daily stuff to answer your questions.

S60 T6 Road & Track magazine Feburary 2011

One very well written story about K-Pax Volvo S60 and our stock S60 T6. Magazine goes on sale in couple of weeks. Great photography of K-Pax car. Here’s couple of quotes by Shuan Bailey:

“…honestly I was expecting the new S60 and its Naughty Volvo advertising campaign to be mostly hype. I was wrong. ”

“A quick glance back at our last test of the Volvo S60 R in August 2005 reveals that this new car is a better athlete in every way.”

2011 S60 T6 Engine Award Just Announced

Volvo EngineWard’s Auto World, one of our leading automotive industry magazines, does an annual Top 10 engines awards. I asked one of their staffers how they judge what’s best. Basically, 70% of their scoring is based on real-world daily commute driving. How does the throttle response feel? Does it exceed expectations? Is noise/vibration/harshness an issue? The other 30% is about technology. Does it use new, innovative technology? Is torque and horsepower matched?

Here’s more information about this important acknowledgment of Swedish engineering:

Volvo’s Powerful T6 Engine Wins Prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award

Rockleigh, N.J. (December 7, 2010) –  Volvo’s hot new S60 sport sedan continues to impress the pundits with the announcement of its powerful T6 engine being lauded as one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2011. With a blistering 300 horsepower, 325 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 2,100 rpm and combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, it’s easy to see why.

This year marks a first for Volvo to win the annual award bestowed by the editors of Ward’s. In all, 38 vehicles with new or significantly improved engines were tested and evaluated. “Volvo clearly benchmarked BMW in developing the supremely smooth T6 engine, based on its delicious mid-range power band and paucity of turbo lag,” noted Tom Murphy, Executive Editor of Ward’s AutoWorld in his December 7 article highlighting the awards. “This engine is perfectly suited for the all-new S60 and powers it into contention against bigger, better-established luxury entries.”

The T6 engine, internally known as the B6304T, matches the torque of Volvo’s V8, but makes its power far lower in the rev range: 2,100 rpm compared to 3,950 rpm. While boasting 300 horsepower, fuel economy figures for the T6 of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway make it one of Volvo’s most fuel efficient engines offered in the U.S. In fact, the T6 engine is 17 percent more fuel efficient than the V8. Aside from the S60 sport sedan, the turbocharged T6 engine is also available in the 2011 S80, XC60 and XC70.

“The S60′s T6 engine is simply the best engine Volvo’s ever produced,” noted Doug Speck, President and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. “It’s powerful, smooth, and gets great fuel economy. We’re honored that Ward’s is recognizing the T6 engine as one of its 10 Best for 2011.”

Essentially a heavily modified version of the T6 originally introduced in the 2009 XC60 premium crossover, the goal for the 2011 iteration was to perfectly balance performance with fuel economy and maintain a low environmental impact. Volvo engineers focused their efforts on reducing internal friction, increasing power output and improving fuel economy.

The B6304T T6 benefits from improved valve tappets, which feature Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating. The carbon structure is extremely hard and has self-lubricating properties. The DLC surface reduces camshaft friction, enabling lower fuel consumption and extending service life. Additionally, a new type of Denso Super Ignition Spark Plug results in increased power output, improved fuel economy, better cold starting performance and longer service life. Highly polished cam shafts also result in reduced friction which helps contribute to the T6′s excellent fuel economy and performance.

Volvo also developed new engine management software optimized for fuel economy. The six-speed “Geartronic” transmission received revised mapping software that allowed for a new “Sport” mode. In “Sport” mode, the transmission remaps the shift points, holding the shifts higher in the rev band for improved performance. Other enhancements include revised frame bearings within the crankshaft, a low-friction accessory drive belt tensioner and aluminum water pump housing, all designed with improved engine efficiency in mind.

Volvo will be honored at the upcoming Ward’s 10 Best Engines banquet on January 12, 2011 at the Renaissance Center Marriott in Detroit, MI.

Irv Gordon’s newest friend

The day before last week’s Open House in Rockleigh, Stephen Jacoby, our new CEO of Volvo Cars, Sweden (and rest of our Volvo world) came by to meet with employees. “I spent years working to take market share away from Volvo as head of VW group US. Now I am going to work on taking back market share.” On so many fronts, those are such sweet words. He has the fire and we at have his support to take the foundation laid by Steven Odell, our last CEO, and move forward to a next generation Volvo.

Anyway, Irv came by to meet with friends in our Parts department and we ran into each other in our lobby. Doug Speck, VCNA CEO, came out of what must be one of his never-ending run of meetings for the week, to greet Irv. “Hi Irv, want to meet Stefan Jacoby?” Out strides Jacoby and he wants to see Irv’s Volvo. We all head outside and got one cool photo op.

I’m heading to Miami, Florida this week for their auto show. We’re doing our North American debut of the Volvo S60 R-Design.

I just love the sound of fine machinery

Brian Douglas, KSFO Motoring, Automotive News Talk recorded this today out at Oregon Raceway Park.

This track is located in eastern Oregon near the very small town of Grass Valley – basically wheat fields with beautiful vistas. Brian, with Andy Pobst of K-PAX at the helm, sat shotgun – oh the smell of hot pavement in the morning. This race season K-PAX Racing just finish 1-2 in Second Race at VIR, and clinch Drivers′ and Manufacturers′ Championships. This was in there highly modified S60. Later today we all drove regular S60′s at ORP track. Was great fun! I wasn’t slow but not real fast either, I’d say most journalists were much faster and smoother than I. At least I didn’t collect any dirt while pushing our S60 around tight turns. Turn up your speakers.

And here is Randy Pobst with our stock S60, track pattern is reversed from Andy’s run.

And I was forbidden to do this kind of test

I’m up in Newberg, OR for two weeks of S60 launch activities with about 120 US and Canadian journalists. Amazing how weather up here is very much like Sweden. Stunning when the sun comes out, gray otherwise.

Anyway, last year James and I told our counterparts in Sweden we would be fine acting as ‘dummies’ for media to test Pedestrian Detection system. The email ink was still wet when VCC said under no conditions were we to be dummies on company time. So, for all officially sponsored tests we used ‘Bob,’ child dummy.

Nik Miles from NW area really wanted proof in the pudding so, without our knowledge, he did the following test. Olle, I swear I had nothing to do with it.

We have the weekend off, so Frank Vacca, Project Manager for S60, Thomas Broberg, Head of Volvo Safety, and I (lowly PR guy) are heading out to explore this part of America in our new S60.

We’ll publish some photos as soon as I can figure out how to download from my camera without proper software …

Take care,
dan
